Gesellschaft definition is - a rationally developed mechanistic type of social relationship characterized by impersonally contracted associations between persons; also : a community or society characterized by this relationship. Gesellschaft (often translated as "society" or "civil society"), in contrast to Gemeinschaft, describes associations in which, for the individual, the larger association never takes on more importance than individual self interest. Gesellschaft is maintained through individuals acting in their own self interest. Gesellschaft refers to the more instrumental, purposeful types of relationship typical of industrial society. Gemeinschaft refers to the most elemental type of society, founded on feelings of group identity. Gesellschaft societies are mediated by the impersonal rational marketplace.
