The Spiny Water Flea (Bythotrephes longimanus) is native to the freshwater lakes of Europe and Asia. It made its way to the Great Lakes by 1984 and probably reached our lakes not long after. Like Daphnia, which is also a type of water flea, Spiny Water Fleas can either reproduce asexually, to achieve very dense populations, or sexually, to produce hardy resting eggs.

The genus “Daphnia” is a group of aquatic organisms which are commonly known as “water fleas” and can range in body length from 0.2–8.0 mm with the exception of Leptodora, which measures up to 18 mm. Daphnia are commonly found in freshwater. They live in almost every nutrient-rich (eutrophic) body of water. Daphnia are filter feeders that direct small suspended particles into their mouth by a water current produced by their leaf-like legs (Figure 1). Daphnia 's common name of 'water flea' comes from its jump-like movement, which results from the beat of the large antennae used for swimming (Figure 1).

Daphnia are members of the order Cladocera, and are one of the several small aquatic crustaceans commonly called water fleas because their saltatory swimming style resembles the movements of fleas. Like Daphnia, which is also a type of water flea, Spiny Water Fleas can either reproduce asexually, to achieve very dense populations, or sexually, to produce hardy resting eggs. Unfortunately, Daphnia are a favorite prey of the larger B. longimanus. The best known genus is Daphnia, ubiquitous in ponds and streams in Europe and North America.

Observing daphnia pulex (water flea) under a compound microscope 2016-07-06 The Daphnia magna, more commonly known as water flea, is indigenous to ponds and lakes in northern and western North America. This crustacean has an outer transparent covering called the carapace. The unique physiology of the water flea is useful in translational research allowing researchers to visibly study all of the bodily systems without causing harm to the specimen (2). 2011-02-04 1 Water Flea (Daphnia lumholtzi)Ecological Risk Screening Summary U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, February 2011 Revised, November 2016 Web Version, 3/30/2018 Photo: … 2018-12-01 Daphnia pulex, although often called a water flea, is actually a freshwater crustacean closely related to shrimp.
